Medallion with Relief Portrait of Thomas Paine
Description:
Dimension:H:4.500in W:3.625in D:0.750in
Abstract:
Small, plaster, bust-length portrait relief of Thomas Paine within an oval medallion. The top center of the medallion has been fitted with a small brass loop. Medallion appears to have been cast in plaster from a mold. Finishing touches were probably added by hand and may have included smoothing (especially of mold seams, one of which is visible at the top center of the medallion’s outside rim) and light burnishing. The reverse of the medallion is marked "T. Paine" in script. While this inscription closely resembles Paine’s signature, it was likely not signed by Paine himself. The maker and date of this object are presently unknown, but it may have been created after the 1793 print by William Sharp.

This marble portrait bust of Benjamin Franklin presents the diplomat wearing an overcoat and a loosely tied cravat. His face is highly modeled, and the diplomat’s age is apparent in his wrinkled jowls and creased forehead. Franklin looks out with a straight gaze; his eyes have been carefully detailed with pupils and irises. Franklin’s left eyebrow is slightly raised, and his long hair falls easily over his ears. The front pedestal bears the painted inscription: "BENJ. FRANKLIN"; the inscription is partially abraded with substantial loss in the lettering.

Bust of Benjamin Franklin

Caffieri, Jean-Jacques
Abstract:
This marble portrait bust of Benjamin Franklin presents the diplomat wearing an overcoat and a loosely tied cravat edged with a fine fringe. His face is highly modeled, and Franklin’s age is apparent in his wrinkled jowls, chin, eyes (without delineated pupils), and forehead. The eyebrows of this bust are well-wrought and bushy, and his full, long hair falls over his ears. There are no identifying signatures, maker’s marks, or dates on the bust. Most documented busts which emerged from Jean-Jacques Caffiéri’s atelier are different in three ways from this object. (1) In all documented plaster busts by Caffiéri, Franklin’s eyes are marked with clearly delineated pupils. (2) No documented bust of Franklin by Caffiéri bears decorative fringe along the edge of the cravat. (3) Caffiéri is not known to have ever executed copies of the Franklin bust in marble. This piece has been attributed to Caffiéri, but may be a high-quality copy after his original composition by Francesco Lazzarini, Giuseppe Ceracchi, or another yet-to-be-identified sculptor. The rendering of details of the cravat and eyes of this bust resemble a full-length sculpture by Lazzarini at the Library Company of Philadelphia.
